Willdan Group, Inc. (WLDN - Nasdaq) is one of the nation's preeminent providers of energy management services to utilities, local governments, and private enterprises. We are seeking a talented individual to fill the Manager, Operational Accounting for our East Coast operations. Reporting to the Corporate Controller, this key position will supervise and manage a team of 4-6 professionals and be an integral member of our operations team serving as the liaison between regional offices and Willdan Corporate Accounting. The ideal candidate must be knowledgeable in all aspects of project accounting and revenue recognition within the engineering consulting and/or contract accounting businesses. We are a fast-paced company that relies heavily on our Project Accounting Team to work closely with our Operating Unit Managers to ensure financial accuracy and keep the firm aligned with project financial targets.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Supports regional Operating Managers in monitoring financial results and regional financial forecasting/budgeting efforts
  • Oversees regional Project Accountants to ensure accurate monthly financial reporting of costs and revenues, timely customer invoicing and proper project setups
  • Performs month-end accounting functions necessary to achieve accurate and timely monthly financial results
  • Ensures completion and review of all project accrual reconciliations, identifies and communicates findings to senior management
  • Performs month end accruals
  • Prepares monthly reports on job performance and reconciles variances between general ledger and sub-ledgers
  • Supports, trains regional Project Accountants and monitors their quality performance
  • Provides guidance to project accounting team and resolves project accounting inquiries
  • Strong working relationship, collaboration and partnership with Operating Unit Managers and Senior Management
  • Reviews and analyzes operating unit’s monthly results to identify trends, anomalies, inconsistencies and/or exceptional results for senior management review
  • Provides timely explanations on actual to budget/forecast variances and provides corrective action recommendations where necessary
  • Monitors and reports on trends, anomalies related to Accounts Receivable, Unbilled Receivables and Working Capital levels in the operating organization
  • Ensures project set ups are properly structured to accurately track project costs and revenues in compliance with revenue recognition standards and contract language
  • Assists with accounting and finance system upgrades- testing new modules and functionality
  • Performs duties related to compliance, audits and taxes
  • Ensures internal control procedures are operating effectively
  • Prepares and records journal entries and account reconciliations
  • Relays headquarter accounting processes to region’s operation teams
  • Special projects as needed

Qualifications

  • Full knowledge of all accounting functions, general ledger and financial statements using U.S. GAAP
  • In-depth knowledge of Deltek Costpoint is strongly preferred. Knowledge in similar project-based systems is a must
  • Understand different revenue recognition rules and have experience within professional engineering and construction contract accounting- knowledge of ASC 606
  • Understanding of different contract types- Fixed Fee, Unit Base, Time & Material, etc.
  • Highly articulate with excellent communication skills and strong customer service skills
  • Strong analytical skills necessary to evaluate financial statements, documentation and reports
  • Must be able to logically and independently plan, organize and complete work
  • Must be able to make progress on multiple assignments under adverse conditions and time constraints
  • Ability to work as a productive member of a team
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast paced, changing work environment

Education, Training & Certifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree- Accounting, Finance or related field is strongly preferred
  • 5-7 years project accounting experience, preferably within Professional Engineering or Construction space
  • Strong computer skills and in-depth knowledge of large ERP systems
  • Management experience
  • Strong U.S. GAAP knowledge
  • SOX Compliance
