VDOT’s Materials Division is seeking an experienced Professional Engineer to manage and administer the geotechnical program. The selected candidate will provide statewide high quality professional geotechnical engineering analysis, design, consultation, and recommendations for the purpose of identifying, evaluating, and solving complex geotechnical conditions in support of the Department’s Preliminary Engineering Program. The emphasis will be on Construction, Structure and Bridge, Maintenance, and Alternate Project Delivery ( APD ) Divisions.

As program manager, the selected candidate will serve as the responsible charge engineer for the geotechnical program related contract specifications, as well as provide policy guidance and technical support to the Districts Materials, Construction, and Maintenance Sections statewide with all aspects of the current geotechnical program. This includes review and design support of geotechnical engineering structures for the Department’s construction and maintenance projects.

The program manager will also provide leadership and guidance to the Districts’ geologists and geotechnical engineers in matters related to geology and geotechnical exploration investigation techniques; prepare and assist in the development of plans, specification and standards; review, manage and prepare slope stability analyses, soil-structure interaction analyses and geological data inventory; manage the department’s professional and nonprofessional on-call geotechnical service contracts; partner with counterparts in APD Division, Structure and Bridge Division, and Soils Testing and Buried Structure Design Section to address issues related to geotechnical engineering; train and disseminate technical expertise to Central Office and field personnel; assess research needs in the respective field and cooperate with the respective research entities to initiate studies to address the identified need, review research work, and facilitate research recommendation implementation. This position requires frequent communication with the Department’s Central Office, FHWA , and District personnel, as well as consultants, contractors, and vendors.

This position is physically located in Sandston, VA.
